Episode 05 — The First Ledger

Ryan Kingdom Episode 05 — The First Ledger June 5, 2026 · Ryan LAB The ring did not fit. It was a quarter-size too large, made for a hand the prime minister had measured three winters ago against a boy who had since grown in every direction except the one the ring had been cut for. Lyen felt it turn loosely on his finger as he raised his hand to receive the proclamation, and he understood, in the space of that small motion, that the first decision of his rule would be whether to mention it. He did not mention it. A ring that does not fit can be resized in an afternoon by a court jeweler, quietly, without anyone outside the workshop ever knowing. A ruler who announces, on the morning of his proclamation, that the symbol of his office was made wrong, has told the assembled court two things at once: that the previous administration measured carelessly, and that he, the new ruler, notices such things and says them aloud. The first was a small truth. The second was a large m...

Ryan Kingdom — Episode 5: The Unsigned Name

Ryan Kingdom · Episode 05 — The Unsigned Name 2026-04-29 · Ryan LAB The name had no title attached to it. That was the first thing Lyen noticed. Carved into the underside of the center step — not scratched but properly cut, the kind of work a stonemason does slowly — were eight characters in the old script. No lord before it. No lineage marker after. Just the name itself, sitting alone in the dark beneath the step, visible only if you knelt down and angled a lamp just right. Lyen had been kneeling for a long time. * * * He had not told The Architect about the carving. He had not told anyone. He had memorized the eight characters, stood up, replaced the lamp to its bracket, descended the tower in the counterclockwise direction that the protocol required, and walked back to his chamber in the east wing with the name held carefully in the front of his mind, the way you carry something fragile across a wet floor. * * * The archive room was on the second floor of the records ...

Episode 04 — The Fourth Mark

Ryan Kingdom Episode 04 — The Fourth Mark April 24, 2026 · Ryan LAB A plain round step at the center of a tower chamber — and what is carved beneath it. Lyen slept for three hours. He woke before the bell and did not move for the first few breaths. The ceiling of his chamber was carved with the same counterclockwise spiral that ran down the imperial tower stair, and he had been told, as a boy, that the spiral in the ceiling and the spiral in the stair were supposed to be read in opposite directions, so that the heir above the ceiling and the climber below the stair would always be walking away from each other even when they were going to the same place. He had not understood the instruction then. He understood it now, not as a metaphor but as a physical fact: a good heir does not chase. He waits at the end of his own spiral and lets the thing he is owed walk toward him. He sat up. The chamber was cold in the way that rooms with stone walls are cold at the end of wi...

Ryan Kingdom — Episode 3: The Black Ribbon

Image
Ryan Kingdom Episode 03 — The Black Ribbon April 22, 2026 · Ryan LAB An imperial wax seal tied in black thread — the sign that the message inside is a condolence. At the base of the imperial tower, Lyen pushed the iron door open the rest of the way and stepped out into the cold. He had climbed counterclockwise and descended counterclockwise. He had spoken the founding oath of the Ryan Kingdom in the top chamber and received no answer from the dome. He had passed a woman on the stair who carried an imperial wax seal tied in black. He had seen the door at the base swing open by itself as he began to descend. He had thought, climbing back down, that his left hand resting on the hilt of the sword he was not yet officially permitted to carry was a coincidence of posture. By the time he crossed the threshold of the iron door he no longer thought it was a coincidence. Outside the tower the courtyard was empty. It should not have been empty...

Ryan Kingdom — Episode 2: The Counterclockwise Climb

Image
Ryan Kingdom Episode 02 — The Counterclockwise Climb April 21, 2026 · Ryan LAB A medieval spiral staircase — the shape the imperial tower deliberately does not take. At midnight on the first full moon of winter, Lyen was handed a cold iron key the size of his forearm and told to climb alone. The Architect had trained him for six years for this night without once calling it training. It had always been something else. A correction of posture during supper. A sudden question about the angle of a shadow at noon. A request to recite the founding oath of the Ryan Kingdom from memory while polishing a pair of boots. Lyen had not known that any of these small things were preparation for a climb. He only understood now, standing at the base of the imperial tower with the key in his palm, that everything had been preparation. The tower rose in front of him as it always had — tall, white, silent. From outside it looked like any other spire. The...

Ryan Kingdom — Episode 1: Market Value

Ryan Kingdom Episode 01 — Market Value April 13, 2026 · Ryan LAB The first thing The Architect noticed was the sky. It was the wrong color. Not dramatically wrong — not red or green or some other fictional-apocalypse shade that would have made the situation immediately obvious. It was blue. But the blue was off by maybe fifteen nanometers, shifted toward violet in a way that his eyes registered as discomfort before his brain caught up with a reason. He stood in ankle-high grass at the edge of a dirt road. The air smelled like woodsmoke and something mineral — iron, maybe, or wet limestone. The road curved downhill toward a cluster of stone buildings with thatched roofs. Beyond them, farmland stretched to the edge of a forest so dense it looked like a wall. "Glitch," he said. "Where are we?" The small robot at his feet whirred, rotated its upper sensor array 270 degrees, and clicked twice. "Insufficient data,...
